In continuation of what has become a tradition, the theme of the
2004 calendar is yet another form of art: wildlife photography.
And from the wide, wonderful canvas of wildlife, we've chosen
birds. Specifically, those around in and around Bangalore city.
The photographs come from the portfolios of four outstanding
wildlife photographers of Karnataka.
Growing, crowded cities are a sign of our times and a reality of
our day. Sadly concrete and congestion is not the best environment
for nature to display its wonders. Very fortunately, Bangalore
is still a place of parks and gardens and greenery.
Our city's water bodies are being revitalised. Attempts are being
made to curb pollution. It's an atmosphere encouraging to shoots
and saplings; to buds and butterflies. And to birds.
While many old friends like the house sparrow are seen less and
less today, our trees are still home to many vibrant and vocal
birds: barbets, bulbuls, mynas, woodpeckers, robins, kingfishers
and hoopoes—to name just a few. The lucky Bangalorean can
still wake up to birdsong. And be rewarded with flashes of feathered
colour amidst the branches of trees. Or watch a sky come suddenly
alive with graceful forms in breathtaking flight. Not only are
birds beautiful, they're useful too. They eat insects and vermin,
pollinate flowers, disperse seeds and fertilise the earth.
Birds are gifts of nature our forefathers could take for granted.
We need to work a little harder to enjoy the same privilege. Brigade
Group is doing its bit to ensure this happens. With professional
advice from our specialist tree consultant, we are planting the
kinds of trees and plants that birds like to call home. We intend
our properties, where possible, to house feathered residents in
plenty. To delight the eyes and the ears, and soothe the mind.
A poet once said,
"What is this life if, full of care,
We have no time to stand and stare."
We'd like to add: "Or listen."
