Found in pairs, these birds are a delight to watch: often hanging
down acrobatically from twigs and branches.
Colour and description: Sparrow sized. Glossy, uncrested
black head, glistening white cheek-patches, grey back, whitish underparts,
broad black band down the centre. Strong, conical bill. Male and female look
alike.
Call: A sweet titter or sweeching notes uttered while moving. Male
has a loud, whistling song during the breeding season.
Food: Insects, insect-eggs and larvae, flower buds, fruits,
nuts and seeds.
Nesting season: February to November, but can vary with locality.
Often, two successive broods raised. Male and female share parental duties.
Nest: Hole in a tree or wall, earthcutting and sometimes
in unorthodox places like pipes and poles. Nest is made of a collection of
hair, moss and feathers.
Eggs: Four to six, white or pinkish white, spotted and speckled
with reddish brown.
