August 31, 2015

Mysore in Karnataka has been named the cleanest city in the Swachh Bharat rankings. Mysore leads the list with minimal open defecation and extensive adoption of solid waste management practices. The rankings were based on a combination of secondary data and on-the-ground inspection on the issues of cleanliness and sanitation. Southern states fared the best in the survey with 39 cities in the top 100. Mysore in Karnataka topped the charts, followed by Tiruchirappalli, Navi Mumbai, Kochi, Hassan, Mandya and Bengaluru. Some of the parameters include the extent of open defecation, solid waste management, septage management, waste water treatment, drinking water quality, and mortality due to water- borne diseases. The survey covered 476 cities and municipalities in 31 states and union territories, each with a population of over 100,000 people.
